Walling

Purbeck Stone has been used as a building material for centuries, is extremely durable, and its characteristic colour and texture define the historic vernacular buildings of South Dorset. We offer several kinds of walling stone. Please select one of the following for more detail.

Ashlar

Ashlar is a building stone that has been sawn on all six sides to specific dimensions. All ashlar is cut to order. Ashlar can be produced with a sanded, tooled or textured face. Ashlar is sold by the m2.

Dubbers

Unit Dubbers are supplied for house building. They are sawn-bedded making them easier to lay than dressed or guillotined walling. They have straight crisp edges, top and bottom, with a dressed face and split sides. We usually supply gauged heights of 65mm, 143mm and 217mm, which are usually 100mm on bed. Our usual mix is 60% 65mm, 30% 140mm, 10% 215mm. We can cut other guages if required. Random Dubbers are also sawn-bedded with a dressed face, but are supplied in random heights, Again, they are usually 100mm on bed. All dubbers are sold by the M2.

Dressed Walling

Dressed walling is mainly used for house building and mortared garden walls. This product is supplied in bed widths of 100mm-125mm (4”) and 125mm-150mm (5”). We occasionally have requests for thicker beds. Dressed walling is first guillotined, and then hand-worked by a stonemason. The face of each stone is pitched around to produce crisp edges and a convex face. It is important when laying the stones to ensure that they are bedded correctly and coursed. The build area for dressed stone is almost the same as guillotined;1 tonne will build approximately 4.4m2 of face.

Guillotined Stone

Guillotined walling is mainly used for house building and mortared garden walls. This product is supplied in bed widths of 100mm-125mm (4”) and 125mm-150mm (5”). We occasionally have requests for thicker beds. The stone is supplied as it has been split by the guillotine. The stone is not worked to form finished rectangular blocks, so some dressing may be required on site particularly with the 100-125mm on bed. There will always be variation in the bed depth as it is not possible to crack the stone exactly. It is important when laying the stones to ensure that they are bedded correctly and coursed. 1 tonne will build approximately 4.4m2 of face.
