Flooring

The full range of Purbeck beds is used in our Traditional Mix in order to create a dramatic and characterful patchwork effect. Darker beds include Purbeck Marble, Grub and Feather; paler beds include Downsvein, Thornback, Spangle and Freestone.

This beautiful floor is composed of a mix of the paler-toned Purbeck beds including Spangle, Thornback, Wetson Bed, Freestone and Downsvein.

Grey Purbeck Marble is rare, and makes beautiful flooring. Because it naturally occurs in smaller block sizes, this stone is most suitable for narrower coursed widths and shorter lengths.

New Vein has a beautiful mottled appearance, with warm buff and honey tones complemented with areas of blue-grey. These are the ‘blue heart’ at the centre of each natural block.

Vye Bed has a fine-grained and shell-rich appearance, with warm mid-browns complemented with areas of blue-grey. These are the ‘blue heart’ at the centre of each natural block.

Spangle has a consistent pale background with distinctive fossil oyster shells- and occasional large ammonites as can be seen in the WongAvery Gallery.

Grub is the most varied of the Purbeck beds, with tones ranging from mid-browns through to darker blues and browns. It makes distinctive and robust flooring.

Blue Purbeck Marble makes magnificent flooring, with tiny fossil shells set against a background of dark blue tones.

Downsvein has warm buff tones with a subtle texture of fossil shells. It has been used for paving for centuries, and makes particularly robust flooring.

Inland Freestone varies in tone from cream to mid-brown. With a fine grain and subtle texture of fossil shells, it makes excellent flooring.
