Two new altars for Salisbury Cathedral, designed by William Pye and Luke Hughes, were crafted using Purbeck stone cut, finished, and inscribed by Haysom Purbeck Stone. The octagonal Spire Crossing altar featured carved texts from the Gospel of St Matthew on each facet, with eight antiphons engraved around the bronze top edge and icons referencing elements of the Cathedral. The rectangular Trinity Chapel altar was engraved with a passage from George Herbert’s poem The Altar. Both pieces were consecrated on 14 January 2024 by the Bishop of Salisbury.
