Purbeck Spangle
Information
Spangle features large, distinctive fossils set within a smooth, light beige matrix with minimal background texture. The stone displays a clean, open composition where individual fossil forms stand out clearly against the pale, uniform base color.
Spangle is named from the ‘glitter’ within its many fossil shells. Spangle is one of two of our stones (the other being Pond Freestone) that were traditionally sourced as ‘cliff stone’, ie quarried from the cliff quarries that run along Purbeck’s five miles of coastal cliffs. Quarrying on Purbeck’s cliffs ceased after WW2, but Haysom Purbeck Stone has been quarrying Spangle and Pond Freestone at St Aldhelm’s Head since the late 1940s. Haysom Purbeck Stone is the only quarry with a stock of this stone.
Recently we supplied Spangle for restoration work at Southampton dry docks, where HMS Victory is on show, replacing Spangle found in the 18th C dock building.
