Purbeck Newvein
Information
This limestone features a rich fossil matrix with finely scattered shell patterns distributed across a neutral gray-beige background. Natural veining runs through the stone, adding linear movement that contrasts with the organic fossil shells scattered throughout the surface. Like Vyebed, Newvein has a ‘blue heart’, ie a tendency to be blue coloured towards the centre of the block.
Quarried at Belle Vue in Swanage, Newvein was first dug by our company in 1990s. It’s not as durable as other Purbeck beds so we don’t recommend it for external work, but it makes excellent- and very beautiful- internal flooring. We recently produced Newvein flooring for the Music room at Westminster School.
