Purbeck Vyebed
Information
This limestone displays a dense concentration of small fossilised shells in warm brown and grey-blue tones. The tightly packed fossil pattern creates a richly- textured surface. Like Newvein, Vyebed tends to have a blue middle within its larger blocks known as the ‘blue heart’. This is why a single piece of Vyebed can contain both blue and brown areas, adding to its distinctive characteristics.
The name ‘Vyebed’ is likely to have come from the tendency of this stone to split into five. It makes excellent, and very durable, paving. Around the millennium, Haysom Purbeck Stone produced Vyebed for the restoration of Somerset House in London, originally built in the 18th Century.
